Man, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of driving a long stretch of American interstate highway with the radio turned up loud, is there? Fortunately, you can still get that classic radio-blasting road-trip experience, even if your route takes you through the seat of some of the worst radio programming in the land. (We’re not naming names, but it rhymes with Schmindiana.) It just takes a little stage-managing, that’s all.
First, you’re going to need an FM transmitter for your mp3 player. We’re offering three different models of the Philips Transdock, each with its own unique virtues. If you’re into the rubberized “splash proof” look, maybe you’ll favor the Transdock Marine. But it doesn’t charge the newest iPods, so if you have one of those, maybe you’ll prefer the TransDock III. Alternately, if you’re down with the Zune, you’ll want the TransDock Micro II for Microsoft Zune.
There—now you’re no longer at the mercy of whatever’s washing around on the airwaves. Never again will you have to listen to a local high school football game, or a hellfire-and-brimstone radio preacher, or Anne Murray’s “Could I Have This Dance!” Instead, you can be pounding out the drum part to “Runnin’ Down a Dream” on your steering wheel as many times in a row as you want, even if you want it to be zero times, because hey, this is your playlist we’re talking about, not ours.
“But Woot,” you might be saying, won’t I get better sound quality if I just bring a bunch of custom-burned CDs instead?”
Well, yeah. But first of all, that’s going to cost you. Both in blank CDs and in cargo space. And second of all, the proper soundtrack to a classic American automotive experience is the FM radio, OK? Notice that Tom Petty does not sing about a beautiful day when the sun beat down and he had a bunch of CDs he burned for the trip and he was drivin’. It’s the radio. Always the radio.
Even if you do have to hack it a little to avoid road-tripping to Delilah and John Tesh for hours.
